🔍 The secrets behind the artwork

Until a few years ago it was believed that Potter had painted an existing bull. However, technical investigations have shown that the painting "The Bull" was not originally designed in its current large size. Seams on the canvas, still visible today, show that Potter's first plan was just to paint the bull. He later added strips of linen and painted other animals, the farmer and the landscape. 🎨🔬

💭 Potters Inspiration

Most of Potter's work consists of small cabinet pieces depicting scenes of peasant life. It remains a mystery what Potter had in mind when he created this monumental bull. One of the most plausible explanations is that he wanted to emulate famous painters from classical antiquity. 🤔

📜 The Journey of 'Potter's Bull'

In 1795, French troops confiscated "The bull" along with over 200 other works from the collection of William V in the Stadtholder-Galerie am Buitenhof in The Hague and brought him to Paris. The painting impressed the viewers Louvre, where it is among the paintings confiscated from Italy by Napoleon Raphael and Titian hung. Even back then, the uncompromising reality of the work was admired. The first director of the Mauritshuis, Jonkheer Steengracht van Oostkapelle, wrote in the 1826 catalogue: “The imitation of nature cannot be refined to a higher degree of perfection in this wonderful piece”. 🏰🖋️
