category: Jolanta Kurzel

The painter Jolanta Kurzela from Poland is known for her ability, depicting the female figure and nature in her works with great intensity and sensitivity. For many years she has dedicated herself to painting portraits and natural motifs, using the oil technique - a method that is particularly suitable for her bright colors and their longevity is appreciated.

Oil paints, whose history in Europe goes back to the 15th century, consist of linseed oil and pigments. Artists such as Jan van Eyck and Rogier van der Weyden were pioneers of this technique and used the glazing technique to increase the intensity of certain colors by applying transparent layers of oil. In the 17th century, the alla prima technique became popular, allowing spontaneous painting “in one go” and was favored by artists such as Peter Paul Rubens and Diego Velázquez.

For her canvases, Jolanta Kurzela usually uses linen or cotton fibers that are stretched onto a wooden frame or glued to wooden panels. Only after priming is the canvas ready for the painterly composition.

The style of realism that is expressed in her work aims to reflect visible reality as faithfully as possible. Portrait painting, one of the most demanding artistic subjects, requires not only technical skill, but also psychological understanding and a high sensitivity towards the model.
