The Bull by Paulus Potter Mauritshuis Museum in The Hague

🐂 'Potter's Bull' in detail

The Mauritshuis Museum in The Hague is known worldwide for its outstanding collection from the Golden Age of Dutch art. And although many come for the paintings of Rembrandt or Johannes Vermeer , it was " Potter's Bull " that attracted many art lovers. Presenting the bull in every detail, this painting impresses with its care and reality. It is a work of art that impressed many in the past at the Louvre in Paris and still admires many today.

The bull is looking directly at us, as are the cow lying on the ground and the standing sheep. The bull was painted with extreme care down to the smallest detail. Above the trees on the horizon we can see the silhouette of the church in Rijswijk, a village between The Hague and Delft. 🌳🐄

🔍 The secrets behind the artwork

Until a few years ago it was believed that Potter had painted an existing bull. However, technical investigations have shown that the painting "The Bull" was not originally designed in its current large size. Seams on the canvas, still visible today, show that Potter's first plan was just to paint the bull. He later added strips of linen and painted other animals, the farmer and the landscape. 🎨🔬

💭 Potters Inspiration

Most of Potter's work consists of small cabinet pieces depicting scenes of peasant life. It remains a mystery what Potter had in mind when he created this monumental bull. One of the most plausible explanations is that he wanted to emulate famous painters from classical antiquity. 🤔

📜 The journey of 'Potter's bull'

In 1795, French troops confiscated "The Bull" along with over 200 other works from the collection of William V in the Stadtholder Gallery at Buitenhof in The Hague and brought it to Paris. The painting impressed viewers in the Louvre, where it hung among the paintings of Raphael and Titian confiscated from Italy by Napoleon. Even back then, the uncompromising reality of the work was admired. The first director of the Mauritshuis, Jonkheer Steengracht van Oostkapelle, wrote in the 1826 catalogue: “The imitation of nature cannot be refined to a higher degree of perfection in this wonderful piece”. 🏰🖋️
