"BrainGate Diva" – A Powerful Work of Art that Breaks Social Norms

Discover the unique strength and individuality in this expressive painting.

Dr. Magdalena Laabs, even as a child, enjoyed reading stories about the Mesozoic Era, known as the age of dinosaurs. In her painting "BrainGate Diva," she references one of them – the Tyrannosaurus rex. Currently, Dr. Laabs runs an engineering firm and is interested in new technologies.

Symbolism of the Figure and Surrounding Elements

In the painting "BrainGate Diva" from the series "Grotesque: The Power of Individualism", a woman is depicted sitting on a green armchair. The woman has a characteristic, expressive face with striking makeup – blue eyeshadow and red lips. Her hands end in three fingers. This representation with three fingers refers to the Tyrannosaurus rex – a carnivorous dinosaur from the Cretaceous period that lived about 66 million years ago. This feature gives her figure a surreal and fantastic look, reminiscent of mythical creatures and alien life forms.

Integration of Technology and Human

"BrainGate" refers to advanced brain-computer interface technologies, symbolizing the connection between the human mind and technology. The surreal interpretation of "Diva" adds an element of theatricality and drama, fitting the surreal style of the painting. It suggests that the figure in the painting is not only unique but also plays an important role in the context of technology and individualism.

Protest and Reflection

The name refers to the theme of protest against surveillance and the loss of privacy. "BrainGate Diva" symbolizes a person who becomes an icon in the fight for the right to maintain their privacy and individuality in a world where technology increasingly intrudes into people's lives.

Mesozoic Era

The Mesozoic Era, often called the "age of dinosaurs," encompasses three main periods: Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous. The Mesozoic Era was a time of great geological and biological changes, dominated by dinosaurs, with the emergence of the first mammals, birds, and flowering plants. Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous are key periods in Earth's history that shaped the modern world. Unfortunately, the Cretaceous period ended with a mass extinction, wiping out 75% of species. This is the direction our world is currently heading. Fortunately, new species emerged in their place. This is similar to the current situation, as the world is now moving towards replacing humans with cyborgs, a combination of human and machine.

Human Connected to Machine

A human connected to a machine, with an implanted chip that can read their thoughts and transmit information, is often referred to as a cyborg. The term "cyborg" comes from "cybernetic organism" and refers to a being that has both biological and artificial (cybernetic) elements. In science fiction literature and scientific fields such as biotechnology and robotics, cyborgs are described as entities with varying degrees of integration of technology with the human organism. These technologies can include implanted chips, mind-controlled prosthetics, and devices that can monitor and influence brain functions. We must remember that any program can be updated, and while you may implant a simple chip today, it may turn out that the same chip can do much more after an update.

Advanced Technology

In the context of advanced technology, implanted chips that can read thoughts and transmit information are often referred to as:

  • Brain implants
  • Brain-computer interfaces (BCI)

These technologies are already in the research and experimental phase, and some of them have medical applications, such as helping people with paralysis communicate or control prosthetics with their thoughts.

Examples and Applications

  1. Neuralink: A company founded by Elon Musk that works on developing brain-computer interfaces that can enable direct communication between the brain and computer.
  2. BrainGate: A research project developing brain implants that allow paralyzed individuals to control computers and devices with their thoughts.
  3. Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS): A medical device implanted in the brain and used to treat Parkinson's disease, depression, and other neurological disorders.

These technologies evoke both enthusiasm and concerns regarding privacy, ethics, and their potential impact on human autonomy and identity.

My Painting is a Sign of Protest

My painting is a sign of protest. We, humans, still want to be individualists. We do not want to be constantly surveilled. It is already being suggested that we implant chips, and we are being told it is for our own good and convenience. But as it often happens, "Every stick has two ends." Yes, it may be convenient to pay with an implanted chip, to open doors this way, but as it happens with electronics, any such chip can be hacked, and then someone could know your thoughts that you do not want to share. Besides, I personally do not want anyone to know my thoughts. I value my individuality, and the right to privacy is extremely important to me.

We do not need the "superpowers" that chips provide, introducing knowledge into our brains. These chips can work based on a direct brain-computer interface (BCI), allowing information to be transmitted directly to our brain. However, we must remember that our brain is the best computer in the world, so there is no need to give access to it to just anyone. The technology for transmitting information to the brain and reading information from the brain already exists, although it is still in the research and early application phases. It is better to be a dinosaur without chips than a cyborg with chips. Let’s change history and prevent the extinction of Homo sapiens, as the dinosaurs did.

Warning

The painting is meant to make us think about whether we want to go extinct as humans like the dinosaurs and wake up one day with a chip in our heads that reads even our deepest thoughts. Dinosaurs went extinct over millions of years, but today this is happening much faster, and before we know it, we will become cyborgs with a chip in our heads. Many may think it is good because you can pay in the store without having a credit card or phone. But is reading our deepest thoughts and transmitting to us what we should think really good for us as people?

Reflection

Do you think it is impossible? But it is already possible. The fact that you do not know about it only means that unfortunately, we down here do not know much. We are like the workers in Egypt who helped build the pyramids for the elites.

Breaking Norms

The figure of the woman, surrounded by intense colors and surreal elements, symbolizes the constant struggle for personal freedom and self-expression. Her expressive face and the pillow on her head are a call to accept and celebrate what makes us unique. The pillow on the woman's head suggests a state of dreaming, introspection, or an inner world that remains private and personal despite external control and surveillance. Through her unique appearance and surroundings, I want to convey that true freedom is about accepting oneself as one is, regardless of social expectations and norms.

Used Motifs in the Painting

  • Green Armchair: Symbolizes comfort and stability in expressing oneself.
  • Pink Pillows with Dots: Add a surreal element, can symbolize support or comfort in the surroundings.
  • Blue Curtains: Create depth and color contrast, enhancing the surreal character of the painting.

The style of the painting is surreal and grotesque, which fits perfectly with the series "Grotesque: The Power of Individualism." The figure of the woman is depicted in an expressive manner, with exaggerated proportions, giving her a dreamy and fantastic character. Clear lines and intense colors characterize the modern, expressive style that emphasizes the uniqueness and individuality of the depicted figure.

The overall effect of the painting is both fascinating and thought-provoking. The composition and color scheme encourage the viewer to reflect on social norms and personal freedom while highlighting the inner strength and determination of the woman.
